The Course at Sewanne – Sewanne, TN

After a weekend spent in Nashville, Tn, we made it down to Sewanne, TN to checkout both the university and The Course at Sewanne. These brilliant nine holes serve as the course for the men and women’s golf team, students, and those looking for a well laid out and challenging nine hole loop course.

The course was redesigned by Gil Hanse in 2013 with mountain views in mind, tiered greens, and undulating fairways. My first time playing the course was in January so I really discovered just how much undulation there was in the fairways with the dormant grass. This nine hole course can be looped twice, with a different set of tee boxes for the second loop which changes the par on some of the holes making it a 5 instead of a 4 on the first loop.

It was a bluebird kind of day when we visited and as mentioned, the fairways were rolling just as well as the greens. This course challenges you to hit the proper spot of the fairway to setup your approach, which is ever important to be in the right place for.

The third hole, or twelfth hole depending on your loop, asks for a tee shot to an elevated green with mountain vistas beyond it. As you approach the green, I recommend taking a seat on the bench just behind the green to take in the mountain air and views.

The clubhouse was just as efficient as a course that squeezed eighteen holes out of nine. There was a particular coziness to the efficiency that would leave you hanging out there for a pre round drink, or post round snack. Appointed with locker rooms for the golf teams, a well stocked pro shop, kitchen and bar, and stone fireplace to warm up by after a winter round, the space is truly maximized. Less is more here. All of this is laid out in roughly 1200 square feet, without feeling cramped.

Sewanne is known as The University of The South and is steeped in tradition. Beautiful Gothic style architecture throughout the campus really emphasizes the higher education here.

Pairing this course with a day at Sweetens Cove (25 miles away) makes for an awesome golf trip that doesn’t break the bank. You can stay at the Inn at Sewanne, or base out of Chattanooga.
