Miacomet Golf Course – Nantucket, MA

Hannah and I visited Nantucket as part of our honeymoon in July of 2022. Typically, my golf clubs are in tow with me anytime we drive somewhere, and in this case they were lucky enough to catch the flight as well. Pro tip: Anytime I check a bag when flying, particularly my golf clubs, I use an Apple AirTag in the bag to keep track of it since bags seem to get lost more and more these days. The clubs made it safe and sound, so we were off to the races.

Miacomet doesn’t allow you to make advanced tee times if you are playing as a single. The pro shop staff’s advice was to get there when they open (6:00 a.m.) and get your name down on the list for a tee time. Eager to play, I did just that. We stayed in the heart of downtown Nantucket, and the course is about 3 miles south of town. Hannah and I opted for bikes over a car for the week, so that meant the clubs were coming along with me on the bike if I wanted to play. Clubs across my back, I passed just shy of a dozen Land Rover Defenders on the way as I pedaled to the course. Just as I rolled a few putts on the still dewy putting green, they were calling my name for the first tee time of the day at 7:00 a.m. I was paired with three islanders (for the summer at least), and we were setting the pace for the day. We all walked the round. Some straighter down the fairway then others. Nonetheless, Miacomet was an excellent round of golf. The fairways were built on rolling sand dunes, the rough was wispy and light, the greens were firm and true.

There are plenty of Adirondack chairs on the porch of the cedar-shake sided clubhouse to remember your birdies and to forget the bogeys. One of my favorite things about the course was the laid back nature of those there. Everyone was there because they wanted to be, and relaxation was the top priority. Miacomet is an Indian word from the Wampanoag Tribe that originally inhabited the land meaning meeting palace. Everything about this round of golf embodied that this was a meeting place. A meeting place for those that wanted to play an exceptional round of golf and not have a worry about anything else while you’re there except which delicious restaurant had a table for two for the night.

Miacomet co-hosted the 40th U.S. Mid-Amateur tournament along with Sankaty Head. Sankaty is a private club on Nantucket, which hosts one of the last remaining caddie camps in the world.
